Willie Nelson In Watercolor

Is there anyone cooler than Willie Nelson!

Here is a man with clear priorities.  He plays music and he plays golf.

Willie is 84 years old now but it doesn’t seem to have slowed him down a bit.  He just keeps turning out great music.  Recently, he paid tribute to his longtime friend and fellow country legend Merle Haggard with “He Won’t Ever Be Gone” – yet another great song from Willie.

I was lucky on this painting.  I found a picture online that I really liked (that seems to increase the odds of a successful painting by about 80% for me if I like the subject matter).  And I really liked the photograph and so I started sketching.  I had a pretty good sketch done in about a half hour.  From there the painting went pretty well, except I’d say that I should have started light and stayed light – to my mind the picture is just a little too dark and watercolor doesn’t like to be “dark” – it wants light.  Still I think it turned out ok.

When I post these portraits on Facebook, I always look for a great quote from the personality to go along with it.  He has several great ones and it made it hard to pick just one.  The one I posted was this one: “Three chords and the truth.  That’s what a country song is”.

But I might like this one better:

“When I see someone I think is cool, he’s a pretty well-adjusted individual. He’s not too affected one way or the other by what’s happening, no matter what’s going through his mind. ”  That pretty sums up why Willie is cool.  The man is comfortable in his own skin.  I’m not sure he realized he was talking about himself.

Here’s one last Willie quote that I think is full of wisdom:

“Cruelty is all out of ignorance. If you knew what was in store for you, you wouldn’t hurt anybody, because whatever you do comes back much more forceful than you send it out”.
